Der Kameramann Ray June erlernte sein Handwerk auf etwas ungewöhnliche
Art und Weise. Er begann seine Laufbahn nicht beim Film sondern beim US
Army Signal Corps im 1. Weltkrieg.
Dort arbeitete er als Kameramann, was ihm kurze Zeit später den
Einstieg in das Filmgeschäft erleichterte.
Er debütierte mit dem Film "The New Adventures of J. Rufus Wallingford"
(15), es folgten wenige weitere Filme mit "Patria" (17), "The Great White
Trail" (17), "The Missionary" (18) und "The Eagle's Eye" (18).
In den 20er Jahren nahm seine Filmlaufbahn als Kamera konkrete Formen
an und er filmte zahlreiche Stummfilme wie "Penrod" (22), "Wandering Husbands"
(24), "Cornered" (24), "The Phantom of the Forest" (26), "The Golden Web"
(26), "The Final Extra" (27), "The Woman Who Did Not Care" (27), "Sumuru"
(27), "The Siren" (27), "Midnight Life" (28), "Alibi" (29) und "The Locked
Door" (29).
In den 30er Jahren setzte Ray June seine Karriere als Kameramann erfolgreich
fort und avancierte zu einem der besten Kameramänner. Er war ab Mitte
der 30er Jahre bis zum Ende seiner Laufbahn verantwortlich für die
bildliche Umsetzung der Samuel Goldwyn und MGM-Produktionen, die durch
ihre grossartigen Bilder das Publikum begeisterten.
Zu Ray Junes bekanntesten Arbeiten der 30er Jahre gehören "Indiscreet"
(31), "Arrowsmith" (31) - Oscarnomination, "Horse Feathers" (32), "I Cover
the Waterfront" (33), "Roman Scandals" (33), "Treasure Island" (34), "Barbary
Coast" (35) - Oscarnomination, "The Great Ziegfeld" (36), "Espionage" (37),
"Saratoga" (37), "Rich Man, Poor Girl" (38) und "Fast and Furious" (39).
Die 40er Jahren zeugten erneut von der Fertigkeit von Ray June und er
realisierte Filme wie "The Man from Dakota" (40), "The Feminine Touch"
(41), "I Married an Angel" (42), "Twice Blessed" (45), "The Hoodlum Saint"
(46), "The Bride Goes Wild" (48) und "The Secret Garden" (49).
In seinem letzten Jahrzehnt als Kameramann erhielt er weiterhin dankbare
Aufgaben und er bannte populäre Filme wie "Shadow on the Wall" (50),
"Strictly Dishonoralbe" (51), "It's a Big Country" (51), "A Slight Case
of Larceny" (53), "The Court Jester" (55), "Funny Face" (57), "Gigi" (58)
und "Houseboat" (58) auf die Leinwand.
Für "Funny Face" wurde Ray June zum dritten Mal für einen
Oscar nominiert.
