Der Schauspieler Theodore von Eltz begann seine schauspielerische
Laufbahn beim Theater in New York und schliesslich folgten auch erste
Auftritte am Broadway, u.a. mit "Children of Earth" (15) und "The Old
Lady Shows Her Medls" (17).
Seine äussere Erscheinung
prädestinierte ihn als romantischen Helden ihn zahlreichen Stummfilmen,
sein Filmdebüt gab er 1915 mit "His Wife" (15).
Ab den 20er
Jahren avancierte er schnell zu einem begehrten Filmdarsteller und man
sah ihn in Produktionen wie "Extravagance" (21), "The Speed Girl" (21),
"Sherlock Brown" (22), "Manslaughter" (22), "The Woman with Four Faces"
(23), "That French Lady" (24), "Locked Doors" (25), "White Fang"(25),
"A Desperate Moment" (26), "The Sea Wolf" (26), "Perch of the Devil"
(27), "Great Mail Robbery" (27), "Nothing to Wear" (29) und "The Four
Feathers" (29).
Im Tonfilm der 30er Jahre verkörperte er
vermehrt Charakterfiguren in Nebenrollen und er verkörperte die
unterschiedlichsten Rollen.
Zu seinen bekanntesten Filmen dieser
Jahre gehören "The Arizona Kid" (30), "Kismet" (30), "Once a Lady"
(31), "The Midnight Lady" (32), "The Eleventh Commandment" (33),
"Bondage" (33), "Bright Eyes" (34), "Smart Girl" (35), "The Road to
Glory" (36), "A Man Betrayed" (36), "Sea Devils" (37), "Topper" (37),
"The Adventures of Marco Polo" (38), "Marie Antoinette" (38), "Pardon
Our Nerve" (39) und "They Made Her a Spy" (39).
In den 40er
Jahren wurden seine Rollen mit wenigen Ausnahmen immer kleiner und sein
Name wurde teilweise nicht mehr im Vorspann genannt.
Dennoch
blieb er bis in die 50er Jahren als Film- und später
Fernsehschauspieler aktiv. Zu seinen letzten Filmen zählen "Dr.
Ehrlich's Magic Bullet" (40), "A Dispatch from Reuter's" (40), "The Son
of Monte Cristo" (40), "A Shot in the Dark" (41), "Sergeant York" (41),
"Quiet Please: Murder" (42), "Rhapsody in Blue" (45), "The Big Sleep"
(46), "Raiders of the Seven Seas" (53) und "The Unholy Wife" (57).
Neben
seinen Filmauftritten arbeitete er auch für das Radio, u.a. lieh er
seine Stimme der Figur "Papa Barbour" im Radio-Programm "One Man's
Family".
Theodore von Eltz war u.a. mit der Drehbuchautorin Peggy Prior verheiratet.
