Charlie Roellinghoff

Screenwriter and author Charlie Roellinghoff was born Karl Gottlieb Josef Roellinghoff in Munich.

After serving on the Eastern Front during World War I, where he was taken prisoner by the Russians, he was hired by Ullstein Verlag after the war ended. There he worked as an editor for the “B.Z. am Mittag” newspaper and wrote humorous stories.

He eventually made contacts in cabaret circles, wrote texts for them and also appeared in several performances.

Charlie Rollinghoff came to film in 1927 as a screenwriter. After initially writing intertitles, he wrote his first screenplay for “Pique Dame” (27). He quickly established himself as a film writer and productions such as “Der fidele Bauer” (27), “Die Kaviarpinzessin” (1929), ‘Alraune’ (1930), “Kopfüber ins Glück” (1930), “Holzapfer weiss alles” (1931), “Nordpol - Ahoi!” (1933) and “Herr oder Diener” (1934).

He also made a few appearances in front of the camera as an actor, including in “Der Greifer” (1930) and “Die singende Stadt” (1930).

He worked as a film songwriter for the movie “Mein Freund, der Millionär” (1932).

Charlie Roellinghoff died at the age of only 38 as a result of lung disease.
