The actor Tom Powers attended the Academy of Dramatic Arts, afterwards
he was signed by the film company Vitagraph at the age of 21 and he became
a popular silent movie star of the early cinema.
To his first movies belong "The Sheriff's Friend" (11), "The Half-Breed's
Daughter" (11), "The Great Diamond Robbery" (12), "The Hieroglyphic" (12),
"Sisters All" (13), "Checkmated" (13), "Judged by Appearances" (14), "Dr.
Fenton's Ordeal" (14), "The Hunchback" (14), "Lucky Jim" (14) and "His
Great Opportunity" (14).
His preliminary last movies came ini the second half of the 10s into
being with "Barnaby Rudge" (15), "The Painted Lady Betty" (15), "The Traitor"
(15), "Love in a Mist" (16) and "The Auction Block" (17).
Afterwards he concentrated to the theater exclusively and was very
successful on Broadway with comedies and dramas. He was not only active
as an actor but also wrote and directed plays.
He made his comeback in front of the camera not before 1944 when he
was engaged by Billy Wilder for the production "Double Indemnity" (44).
This was the beginning of a second film career for Tom Powers who impersonated
numerous support roles in the next years, often authoritarian characters
like judges, officers et cetera.
To his well-known movies of the 40s belong "The Chicago Kid" (45),
"The Blue Dahlia" (46), "The Last Crooked Mile" (46), "I Love Trouble"
(48), "The Velvet Touch" (48), "Special Agent" (49) and "East Side, West
Side" (49).
His engagements in movies increased in the 50s and beside motion pictures
he also appeared in many TV productions and serials.
To these works belong "The Nevadan" (50), "The Strip" (51), an episode
of the serial"The Lone Ranger: Two Gold Lockets" (51), "Phone Call from
a Stranger" (52), "Flesh and Fury" (52), "Julius Caesar" (53), "I, the
Jury" (53), "Donovan's Brain" (53), an episode of the serial "Adventures
of Superman: Beware the Wrecker" (54), an episode of the serial "Climax!:
The Leaf Out of the Book" (55), "Ten Wanted Men" (55) and "Double Jeopardy"
(56).
