Arthur Somlay

The actor Arthur Somlay learnt his acting abilities at he acting school of the Lustspieltheater in Budapest. He finished his education in 1900 and began his professional career at the theater where he soon became established, especially with roles in plays of William Shakespeare. Afterwards he launched his film career and he impersonated first movie roles from 1912.
To these productions belong "Ma és holnap" (12), "Judith Simon" (16), "Farkas" (17) and "Prof. Satanell" (17).
 
Because of the political instability in Hungary he went to Germany in 1918 where he took part in several silent movies - later in Austria as well - like "Leben und Lüge" (18), "Seelen im Sturm" (19), "Die Fürstin Woronzoff" (20), "10 Millionen Volt" (21), "Ilona" (21), "Der Eisenbahnkönig" (21) and "Jedermanns Frau" (24).
 
With the rise of the sound film he returned to Hungary where he concentrated to the theater again. From the middle of the 30s he acted again regularly in front of the camera.
He took part in the movies "Budai cukraszda" (35), "Rozmaring" (38), "Semmelweis" (40), "Zart targyala" (40), "Lelki klinika" (41), "Magdolna" (42), "Keresztuton" (42), "Gyanu" (44), "Valahol Europaban" (48) and "Nyugati övezet" (52).
 
Besides his activity as an actor he also wrote the screenplays for "Das Rätsel der Sphinx" (21), "Die Abenteuerin von Monte Carlo" (21) and "Der Eisenbahnkönig" (21).
Moreover he directed the movie "Aus dem Schwarzbuch eines Polizeikommissars, 1. Teil: Loge Nr. 11" (21) for which he also wrote the screenplay and appeared as an actor too.
