The actress Hertha Guthmar was born Hertha Guthmann in Tiel in the Netherlands. Shortly afterwards, her family moved to Germany, where she later began her professional career as a secretary. She then turned to acting and took lessons from Sybil Vane-Grüder. She made her film debut in 1929 with “Roses Bloom on the Heath Grave” (29).

In the following years, she played further supporting roles in productions such as “Ariane” (31), “Stürmisch die Nacht” (31), “Der tolle Bomberg” (32), “Wege zur guten Ehe” (33), “Ein Mädchen mit Prokura” (34), “Der Favorit der Kaiserin” (36), “Arzt aus Leidenschaft” (36), “Die Stunde der Versuchung” (36) and “Diener lassen bitten” (36).
