Adolf Abter

The director, producer and screenwriter Adolf Abter was only active for a few years during the German silent film era. Before he became active in the film business he worked as a freelance writer and he wrote articles for the "Filmkurier" and for the "Hamburger Mittagsblatt".

He began his cinematical career as a director of the movie "Miss Sarah Sampson" (19). In the next years followed other movies he directed like "Die Nacht und der Leichnam" (20), "Zwei schwarze Laternen" (21), "Der goldene Skorpion" (21), "Elixiere des Teufels" (22) and "Maud, die grossen Sensation" (23).

To some of these movies he also wrote the screenplay and was responsible as a producer.

With the rise of the National Socialists Adolf Abter belonged as a Jew to the hunted of his country. He had to change his first name to "Israel" in order to be indentified immediately as a Jew.
When he fled to France he was arrested and brought to the detention camp Drancy. It followed the deportation to the KZ Auschwitz Birkenau where he was murdered shortly afterwards.
Adolf Abter was married with the singer Cilly Lasary.
