Herbert Windt


1894 - 1965

The filmcomposer Herbert Windt studied music at the Stern'schen conservatory but with the outbreak of World War I he interrupted his education and he joined the army as a volunteer.
He was seriously wounded at the front in 1917 and he lost an eye.

He continued his musical education after World War I at the university for music in Berlin. He wrote the opera "Andromache" but this work was no success.
But luckily a producer of the UFA was one of the audience of the opera and he offered him to write the music for the movie "Morgenrot" (33). After the music for the documentary  "Natur als Schützerin im Kampf ums Dasein" (32) it was his first feature movie.

Herbert Windt soon became a demanded filmcomposer and he wrote the soundtrack to numerous productions in the next years.
To his well-known works belong "Flüchtlinge" (33), "Wilhelm Tell" (34), "Die vier Musketiere" (34), Leni Riefenstahl's "Triumph des Willens" (35), "Fährmann Maria" (36), "Die Unbekannte" (36), "Unternehmen Michael" (37), "Roman eines Arztes" (38) and Leni Riefenstahl's masterpiece "Olympia" (38).

Herbert Windt continued his career during World War II and he wrote the music for many movies again, among them also some propaganda pictures.
To his compositions of that time belong "Kadetten" (39), "Legion Condor" (39), "Friedrich Schiller" (40), "Stukas" (41), "G.P.U." (42), "Die Entlassung" (42), "Paracelsus" (43), "Besatzung Dora" (43) and "Die Degenhardts" (44).

Herbert Windt was prohibited to work after the war because of his membership of the NSDAP and his collaboration at propaganda movies but from 1948 he was able to continue his career again.
He wrote the music for many movies till 1960 like "Menschen unter Haien" (48), "Stips" (51), "Der Kampf der Tertia" (53), "Christina" (53), "Rosen für Bettina" (56), "Rose Bernd" (57) and "Hunde, wollt ihr ewig leben" (59).

With "Im Namen einer Mutter" (60) came his last filmcomposition into being.

Besides his activity for the film Herbert Windt also wrote numerous soldier songs as well as music for radio plays.
