Ladislaus Vajda

The screenwriter Ladislaus Vajda was born as Laszlo Vajda in Eger.
 
He began his artistic career as a stage actor in smaller cities, later he became a journalist for publications like "Tolnai Vilaglapja" and "Szinhazi Elet".
 
He returned to the stage in 1980 and he realised first plays as a director for the Hungarian Theater where he became the art director in 1920.
During this time he also wrote own plays for the theater.
 
He wrote his first screenplay in 1916 for the movie "A Falu rossza" (16), it followed numerous other screenplays like "Farkas" (17), "A senki fia" (17), "A vörös Samson" (17), "Faun" (18), "Mary Ann" (19), "Ave Caesar!" (19) and "Twist Oliver" (19).
 
At the beginning of the 20s he was the screenwriter for the Hungarian productions "A lélekidomar" (20), "Névtelen var" (20) and "A szerelem mindent legyöz" (21) before he went to Austria and Germany where he was involved in some well-known movies.
To his most popular movies in Austria and Germany belong "Sodom und Gomorrha" (22), "Der junge Medardus" (23), "Namenlos" (23), "Die Sklavenkönigin" (24), "Venus im Frack" (27), "Die Liebe der Jeanne Ney" (27),"Abwege" (29), "Unmoral" (28), "Die weisse Hölle vom Piz Palü" (29), "Die Büchse der Pandora" (29) and "Die Frau, nach der man sich sehnt" (29).
In Austria he often worked together with Gustav Ucicky and Mihaly Kertesz alias Michael Curtis, in Germany with G.W. Pabst.
 
Ladislaus Vajda wrote his last screenplays at the beginning of the 30s with "Westfront 1918 - Vier von der Infanterie" (30), "Nur Du" (30), "Die 3 Groschen-Oper" (31), "Kameradschaft" (31) and "Die Herrin von Atlantis" (32).
 
His son Ladislao Vajda became a well-known screenwriter and director as well.
