The actress Grete Freund attended the conservatory of Vienna before she went to Mannheim together with the family Victor Leon in order to present the play "Der fidele Bauer". When the major of Mannheim refused to accept the actress Mitzi Günther for the role of "Heinerle" because she was a illegitimate child, Grete Freund got the role and made her stage debut thanks to this strange circumstance.

The composer Franz Lehar met Grete Freund and supported her young career. He gave her letter for Berlin in which he recommended her for all his operettas.
Grete Freund became soon established at the German stages and became a popular actress.

She took part in her first movie in 1918 in "Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor" (18), at the beginning of the 20's followed other movies like "Mascotte" (20), "Menschen von heute" (20), "Hannerl und ihre Liebhaber" (21), "Der Fluch des Schweigens" (21), "Der Strom" (22) and "Sodoms Ende" (22).

She founded together with her husband, the actor and director Felix Basch, the "Basch-Freund-Film, Berlin". When the married couple had to emigrate to the USA at the beginning of the 30's she wasn't able to go on from her earlier successes.

She inaugurated the restaurant "Grete's Viennese" in New York in 1940. In 1945 she founded the public welfare "Help Viennese Children" in Hollywood together with Maria Jeritza and others in order to support needy children in Vienna with care packets.
