The actress Ada van Ehlers was born as Ada Egede-Nissen and comes from a acting family, her sisters Aud Egede Nissen and Gerd Egede Nissen became successful movie actresses as well.

She began her acting career in 1916 at the theater, one year later she appeared in a movie for the first time. 
To her first movies belong "Erblich belastet" (17), "Ein Detektiv-Duell" (17), "Der Kampf um den Sturmvogel" (17) and "Luxuspflänzchen" (19). She impersonated the first female detective in film history. 

The theater kept her main activity in the next years - she was among others a busy character actress at the National Theater in Oslo from 1933 to 1969 - in movies she only appeared now and then. 
To these movies belong "Schneeschuhbanditen" (28), "Eskimo" (30) and "Der weisse Gott" (32).

It followed a long interruption before she acted again in front of the camera - even so sporadically. 
In the next decades she took part in the productions "Storfolk of smafolk" (51), "Bernardas hus" (64), "Hedda Gabler" (75) and "Arven" (79).
