The actor Max Devrient was born into a traditional acting family and was regarded as one of the most important German stage actors towards the end of the 19th century. 

After a study for voice and acting at the conservatory Berlin in 1877 he had his first professional appearances at the Hoftheater Dresden. In 1882 was engaged at the Vienna Burgtheater where he performed his most important roles, both as an actor and a director. After the appointment to the post of an ensemble member for life in 1902 followed the appointment to a honorary member of the Burgtheater twelve years later. 
Max Devrient appeared at the beginning of the 20's in movies for the first time. To his well-known movies belong "Die Geheimnisse von London" (20), "Der Roman eines Kammerdieners" (21), "Labyrinth des Grauens" (21), "Versunkene Welten" (22), "Herren der Meere" (22) and "Das Geld auf der Strasse" (22).
