Siegfried Dessauer

1874 - 1945

.
.
The director Siegfried Dessauer joined a travelling theater after his school education where he went on tour through Germany as an actor. Finally he got engagements at well-known theaters in Frankfurt, Cologne and Berlin.

Finally he joined the still young film business and made first experiences as a director assistant before he realised his first movies as a director himself from 1913.

To his first movies as a director belong "Aus eines Mannes Mädchenzeit" (13), "Die Stadt der Verschwundenen" (14), "Der Schienenweg unterm Ozean" (15), "Satan Opium" (15), "Aus dem Leben gestrichen" (16), "Tresorfach Nummer einundzwanzig" (17), "Der König der Nacht" (18), "Der eiserne Käfig" (18), "Das Schicksal des Edgar Morton" (19), "Dämon der Welt" (19) and "Der tote Mann" (19).
Many of those adventure and action movies were very popular at that time.

He continued his film career in the 20s and he realised the productions "Das Geheimnis des Fakirs" (20), "Hotel Atlantik" (20), "Die Frau mit den zehn Masken" (22), "Schande" (22) and finally "Der Hauptmann von Köpenick" (26) - his last silent movie as a director.

Afterwards he could rarely shoot other movies as a director. In the sound film era of the 30s he was again the director of the movie "Man schenkt sich Rosen, wenn man verliebt ist" (30), "Scön war's doch" (32), "Der verliebte Blasekopp" (32) and "Das kleine Varieté" (33).
Instead he had to content himself with the task of a production manager. In this function he worked for the movies "Liebe geht seltsame Wege" (27), "Cagliostro" (29), "Der Hund von Baskerville" (29), "Schneider Wibbel" (31), "Arme, kleine Eva" (31), "Keine Feier ohne Meyer" (31) and "Die Unschuld vom Lande" (33).

Because he was a Jew his film career came to a complete stop with the rise of the National Socialists in 1933. Thank to his marriage with an "Aryan" he was not deported but he was no longer able to work in the artistic field.
Siegfried Dessauer lived in Berlin and his tracks went lost in the last days of the battle in Berlin in 1945.

Besides his activity as a director Siegfried Dessauer also wrote several screenplays.
