The actor Paul Askonas began his acting career at the Stadttheater St. Pölten in 1896. In the next years followed engagements at other theaters, among others at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin in 1904.

He became a permanent member of the ensemble of the Deutsches Volkstheater in Vienna from 1907 to 1920.

He entered the film business in 1912 with "Trilby" (12).
His real film career started in 1920 and he impersonated numerous roles in well-known silent movies.
To his cinematical works of those years belong "Königin Draga" (20), "Drakula halala" (21) where he played the role of Dracula, "Labyrinth des Grauens" (21), "Ludwig II" (22), "Sodom und Gomorrha" (22), "Hoffmanns Erzählungen" (23), "Orlacs Hände" (24), "Das Gift der Borgia" (24), playing the title role in "Rasputin" (25), the filming of "Sacco und Vanzetti/Im Schatten des elektrischen Stuhls" (27) based on a sensational process of those years, "Das Schicksal derer von Habsburg" (28) and "Die Jugend am Scheideweg" (29).

His film career came to an end with the rise of the sound film. He only took part in the short movie "Eine Dirne ist ermordet worden" (30).

Afterwards he dedicated to the theater again.
