Siegfried Aron (this was his real name) could already look back to
first stage experiences when World War I broke out. After the war he soon
came in contact with the film business and acted normally in comical roles
for the time being. Arno looked lanky and thin. This was the reason that
producers tried to match him together with the stout actor Kurt Gerron
(1897-1944) in order to appear as the comedian duo "Beef and Steak" - with
success.
Despite his countless appearances in military oldies Siegfried Arno
could also prove his talent in well-known productions like "Die Liebe der
Jeanne Ney" (26), "Die Büchse der Pandora" (27) and "Tagebuch einer
Verlorenen" (29).
In 1933 the Jew Arno had to go into exile. He went to America via Netherlands,
Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Spain and Portugal. He was immediately employed
in many pictures, e.g. "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (39), "The Great Dictator"
(40) and "It Started with Eve" (41).
Sig Arno, as he called himself since 1940, could make a name for himself
as a drawer and portraitist.
He was married three times, e.g. with the actress Lia Dahms and the
actress Kitty Matern.
Both Siegfried Arno and Wladimir Sokoloff
found help by Wilhelm Dieterle (as he tried
it for many other of his collegues as well) at the beginning of their career
in the USA.
